This year's Deepavali Festival is on 17 th October.Bharath is a land of festivals. Here the sacred festival of deepavali is celebrated with much fervour and gaiety. Actually deepavali is celebrated to dispel the darkness of the mind and ignite spark of wisdom in our heart.In India this festival symbolises the unity in diversity as all walks of life celebrate this sacred event in their own special nature.
There are so many legends attributed to the origin of Deepavali. Anyway
Deepavali literally means array or rows of lights which symbolises brightness against darkness.It falls on the last two days of dark half of month Karthika.Some people celebrate Deepavali as the marriage of Godess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. In Bengal the fesival is dedicated to Godess Kali.Another version of the festival is as follows. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the home coming of Lord Rama ,Sita and Lakhsmana after 14 years' exile in forest and that too after killig the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya , Rama's Kingdom, welcomed the Lord by lighting avali(rows)oflamps (deepas).Hence the celebration has got the name Deepavali.In other branches of religions such as Jainism, Sikhism ,Buddhism etc; also deepavali is celebrated as per their own versions. Some people opine that Deepavali is celebrated to Commemorate the triumph of Lord Krishna over the demon King Narakasura.Lord Krishna put an end to the evil deeds of demon King Narakasura by killing him.Then the people of Dharaka welcomed Lord Krishna with illuminated lamps along the way..The light drives away the darkness and symbolically it wards off evil.
In south India people take an oil bath early in the morning and wear new clothes and visit temples in a customery way. They light fireworks and crackers which is supposed to be the effigies of demon Narakasura
